Ballito was known for being the holiday town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa but over the last several years, many South African citizens have decided to make it their permanent place of residence. Ballito is located roughly 40 kilometres North of Durban and it forms part of the KwaDukuza Local Municipality and iLembe District Municipality. Thanks to the constant development of properties in the area, holidaymakers and locals live in clean, newly built and modern homes. One of the biggest attractions to Ballito is the countless sightings of Dolphins and marine life, giving it the nickname the Dolphin Coast.
The history behind this fast-growing town is that it was established in 1954 by Glen Anil Development Corporation / Investment and the project was headed by Dr Edward, also known as Eddie, Rubenstein (1903-1972) and was created as its private township. The area was originally portioned for a sugar cane farm at Compensation Beach. The Sunday Tribune printed in 1954 an advert for Ballito Bay inviting potential investors to the North Coast with prices of land from R790.00 (395 SA Pounds). By 1964 the zonings for Ballitoville's residential buildings, hotels and a caravan park had already been incorporated into the town plan known as Compensation Beach and this area stretched out from Willard Beach to Clark Bay, Salmon Bay and Port Zimbali.
Today, you can find anything you need, thanks to the two main shopping centres, Ballito Junction and Ballito Lifestyle Centre. Each of them hosts an array of shops and boutiques such as Ballito Spar, Ballito Game and Ballito Woolworths. With countless restaurants on offer, choosing the right one may be a hard choice to make.
One of the main attractions of Ballito is its various beach locations. Willard Beach, or "main beach", is more commonly known for hosting the Mr Price Pro annual event. Thompson's Bay is a popular spot and many locals know it for its "hole in the wall" which leads you to several picturesque coves. Salt Rock Beach and Chakas Rock are great locations for surfers and those that want to explore tidal pools. Lastly, the quiet Christmas Bay beach is popular with fishermen or people who want to spend some time away from the crowds. A very clean and barely visited beach, this location has stunning views and has been a major attraction for new developments, such as Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate and Seaton Estate, as it offers it's soon to be homeowners 180' degrees sea views.
