If there’s one thing that proves how special Cotswold Downs really is, it’s the way this community shows up for the annual North vs South Golf Challenge. Every year, residents circle the date, polish their clubs, and prepare for friendly warfare on the fairways. But this year’s event? It had its own magic. A little louder. A little funnier. A lot more memorable.
What made it different wasn’t just the turnout; it was the atmosphere. The moment the sun peeked over the golf course, golfers were already in full social mode. Not the quiet, half-asleep type of early morning… the opposite. Think upbeat energy, jokes flying around, casual chirping between North and South, and an immediate willingness to play the bizarre little games we brought along.
Even better, many of the golfers weren’t residents at all, yet they blended right in. And seeing teams from other real estate companies like Pam Golding and Wakefields joining the fun (and being unusually cheerful for that time of day) added an unexpected twist to the day.
A Golf Day Where Property Talk Meets Pure Entertainment
It didn’t take long for conversations to shift naturally from golf strategy to real estate. Between tee-offs and games, residents leaned in with questions about the current property market, buyer activity, and how the year had shaped up. Estate living and real estate trends became as much a part of the day as the putters and pitching wedges.
And then came the moment we realised something hilarious:
Most residents couldn’t identify the villages within their own estate.
The game where golfers had to guess a village name based on a displayed home became chaotic in the best way. Confusion. Laughter. Confident answers that were very confidently wrong. It was a great icebreaker, but the novelty faded quickly once the real favourite appeared…
The Infamous Marshmallow Bucket Game
Some events create memories. This one created legends.
A marshmallow. A bucket. A surprisingly competitive bunch of golfers.
What could go wrong? Everything.
What made it brilliant? Also… everything.
Our “helpful” advice—“Just get it up!”—sent the older golfers into fits of laughter. Every technique was attempted. Some made the distance, some came nowhere close, and others hit impossible trick shots that even they couldn’t explain. It became the unofficial talking point of the day.
A Celebration of Skill… and Not-So-Skill
When the golfing wrapped up, the official prize-giving kicked off with classics like:
- Furthest Drive
- Closest to the Pin
- And, most importantly… North Side Champions of the Day
Bragging rights belong to the North for the year, and the South side is already plotting revenge.
But the celebrations didn’t end there.
We stuck around at the bar, mingled with residents, and enjoyed the rare opportunity to connect as a team outside the sales office. These moments are rare—and yet they’re some of the most valuable. Each smile, each conversation, and each shared joke added warmth to an already special day.
And then… came our prize giving.
Armed with 20 bottles of rosé, we hosted the Smiths Property Group Unofficial Awards, honouring the golfers for their true achievements of the day:
- Worst Shot Award
- Closest to the Hole
- Funniest Golfer
- Marshmallow Bucket Champion
- Village Name Guessing Hero
Each bottle opened a new conversation, a new connection, and another reason to laugh together.
